About Sandra

A Passionate Advocate for Children, Community & Responsible Government

Sandra Grills was born in Calgary and raised in Airdrie by parents – a cardiology nurse and a business owner – who instilled a strong work ethic and a deep appreciation for the power of storytelling and the value of community. Over the years Sandra has explored how community and story shapes everything from business process and education to user experience, and personal life.

After earning a BFA in Theatre from the University of Calgary, Sandra, and her husband Michael Grills – an accomplished local artist, illustrator, and entrepreneur game developer – briefly relocated to Edmonton for work opportunities but have now called Calgary home for the past 20 years.

Together, they have two grown children, who were educated within the Calgary Board of Education. Isaiah, a graduate of William Aberhart’s French Immersion program, recently completed his commercial pilot’s license. Juno, a graduate of Central Memorial’s Dance program, began Open Studies at the University of Calgary this past year, with plans to enrol in their Political Science program.

Sandra understands the importance of putting children first. When both her children were diagnosed with Celiac disease almost 16 years ago – during a time when safe, affordable gluten free food was scarce – Sandra took action by establishing one of the first specialty grocery stores in Calgary, meeting not only the needs of her family, but the entire local celiac community.

From there she transitioned into arts and post-secondary administrative positions, and is currently the Documentation & Project Speciality for the University of Calgary, Faculty of Arts Business Operations Centre.

In her spare time Sandra enjoys laughing with her family, pursuing creative projects, reading, watching films, learning to garden, and the company of friends.

Passionate about advocating for the well-being and success of all Calgary students, Sandra is ready to champion their needs and ensure their voices are heard.
